Important Information about Flea Treatments
In an article
in Veterinary Times (Vol 20:8 August 2000, page 27), the manufacturers of a
leading injectable flea treatment state that:
"The fact
that (our product) does not treat
adult fleas raises some important issues…
…if (fleas)
are seen in large numbers (in pets
treated with our product), they can often be traced to a visited household…
… if the
household is "open", especially with roaming cats (i.e. if your pets are not kept indoors) this
will require environmental control with regular use of adulticide".
This is an
admission by the manufacturers that their product alone is NOT effective in
controlling fleas in households where pets are allowed outside, because that
product is not an "adulticide", i.e. doesn't kill adult fleas.
For this
reason, MITCHAM VETERINARY CLINIC will only supply flea products containing
adulticides, since we recognise that the majority of our clients keep dogs and
cats in normal circumstances where they are given outdoor exercise, and are
therefore very likely to come into contact with sources of fleas outside their
own household.
We therefore
recommend modern, safe, adulticide flea treatments such as ADVANTAGE, FRONTLINE
or STRONGHOLD "spot-on" products, together, where necessary, with
environmental sprays containing both adulticide and flea development inhibitors
such as ACCLAIM 2000 or NORSHIELD.
Please ask our
vets or nurses for advice on these highly effective and economical treatments
and preventives.
